He is buried at Mineral Springs Cemetery and has a CSA tombstone. I have what is believed to be the lineage of the BOX family back to the 1600's. Martha is the daughter of John & Sarah BOULTON. She was buried at Cypress Creek Cemetery near her daughter (Palistine BOX-HODGE) because the creek was too high to cross when she died. What I would like to have is any local information on these two families. I would also like to have copies of pictures of them. I am willing to share. Karen Reaves Moss (RosyRoja@aol.com) [Dec 8. 1997] Frantom, Salsbury Marcy Frantom Have you come across any information on the Frantoms/Salsburys in Winn Parish? The Frantoms came from Ouachita Parish in West Monroe after the Civil War first to Vernon, La. in Jackson Parish and then settled in Winn Parish sometime after the 1880 census. They lived on a farm near Sanders Chapel Cemetery on the west side of the parish. John Frantom (b. 4 Mar 1824 d. 18 Dec 1901) was already married to Laura Aurabella Salsbury by that time. They raised 23 children, many of whom were children of Laura's siblings who died young. The reason I have been given that they moved to Winn Parish was because Laura's brother Lazarre (?) was sick and could not take care of his children (Clara, Laura, Floyd, Claudie and Noco). The brother must have had land holdings that went from the current road and crossed the Saline at the Salsbury bridge to a plot of land in Natch. Par. called "The Coursey Place." My grandfather's (Jehue Preston Frantom) ledger records that he was the tutor of the children after his father, John Frantom, died. The ledger shows a payment to lawyers and the Clerk of Court about Jan. 5, l904 which I assume was his attempt to settle the estate. He shows final payment to the children on Dec. 13, l905. The young Salsbury children were given to the care of a Salsbury relative Almeda Jane Salsbury Head, who presumably took them back where she lived. The oldest, Laura, had already married Charlie Beal, stayed in Winn Parish but I am told she died young. I am curious about this because I am interested in trying to determine who this Salsbury was who owned the land and whether he is the Salsbury who the bridge is named for. As you know, the bridge was the site of a Civil War skirmish. According to the old timers around Sanders, there have not been any Salsburys around for several generations. If you run across anything, please let me know. And if you are interested in having me write up something on what I have documented about the John Frantom family, I will be delighted to do so. Gates, Ware Cindy McGee Please help! I am looking for information on Josie WARE, b. Teddie William R. Holly, Jr. If anyone is looking for information on the Teddlie family line, we have an ad hoc group of six researchers with a considerable amount of info. This information has been entered into Family Tree Maker format and will be shared with anyone willing to share their information in order that we might add additional generations to the Teddlie line. At this time we have active Teddlie researchers as far as Pineville, LA; Beaumont, TX; El Paso, TX; Vacaville, CA; Alexandria, VA; Jonesboro, AR; and Slidell, LA. Ten of William James Teddlie's eleven children came to Winn Parish in 1859, after William James Teddlie died in 1843 in Georgia. Most are buried in the Jerusalem Cemetery on the North side of U.S. 84 just West of Winnfield. Some of the Winn Parish names in this line are Eagles, Fletcher, Porter, Barton, Mathis, Shumake, Melton, Ates, Shelton, Dobbs, Houston, Collins, Deen, Bice, McIlwain, Drewett, Milling, Pierson, Williams, Brian, and others. Thompson Jerry Nelson I am researching Thompson's in LA; chiefly in the parishes of Washington, Tangipahoa, St. Helena and East Feliciana. However, information from the LDS/IGI leads me to believe that Thompsons and Bradfords came from that area and into Catahoula, Ouachita and Winn parishes in the mid-1800's. Specifically looking for links to Bradford F. THOMPSON, born in Winnfield in 1857 and links to William Scover THOMPSON, married to Delilah ADAMS as they had a number of children in the Newport area in the 1870's and 1880's. A son, Jesse Franklin THOMPSON, married Rosa Delilah ADAMS in Sikes in 1904. All help is appreciated. Thanx. Wall Suzanne I am researching Alexander Wall b. 1822 probably Covington Co. AL married Martha ? Had children: W. Timothy b. 13 Jan 1865, Martha, Anderson , Warren, Dobe, Tom, Melvin, Andrew. (not necessarily that order). They moved to Winn Parrish after 1850. Some came on the San Augustine Co. Texas. I have been unable to prove Alexander's parents due to the fire at Covington Co. AL; I thought maybe some clue to that parentage and also Martha's parentage might lie with others in the family. Any help would be appreciated. White Teresa Diane Hanson vilab@digisys.net> I am researching the Worsham family of Winn Parish: Lovic and Lousina Burt Worsham; Lovic was brother of my great-grandfather William and one of five children who came to Louisiana from Lowndes Co, AL. I can't find birth and death rec. for William; Maybe he died and was buried somewhere near brother Lovic who was buried in the Atlanta Methodist Church Cemetery. William and Lovic both owned land in Bienville Parish in the late 1870's. When did Lovic go to Winn Parish? What happened to William? Georgia's mother was Elizabeth Holifield Brantley who also lived in Winn. I believe the name of the area was Pineville. Georgia taught school there and may have written columns for a local newspaper as she later did in TX. Thank you, Molly Graham Welch Winn Jim Anderson I am a direct descendant of Munford Winn who was born in 1779 in Virginia whose probable grandfather (John Winn) came to the colonies from Wales in early 1770's. I am curious how Winn Parish got its name and for whom the parish is named. Specifically, I am curious since I have a copy of a 1932 letter from R. W. Ogelsby (a lawyer) to my aunt which indicates his knowledge of my Munford Winn. Womack, Southern Annette (Carpenter) Womack I am researching the Robert WOMACK and Wrizopa (SOUTHERN) family. They were in the 1860 Census of Winn Parish and supposedly lived in the Porter Cettlement east of Joyce. I would like to make contact with anyone working on this WOMACK family or the SOUTHERN family that was in Winn and Jackson Parishes. Wrizopa was suppose to have a rother named Dan or Daniel. Robert also had siblings that moved to Jackson Parish that same time he came to Winn. I have a picture of Robert & Wrizopa (willing to share) and I would love to have more information on either family and/or copies of other pictures and/or documentation. I also have this Womack lineage back to the 1600's. [Nov 27, 1997] Youngblood, Philen Bob Valentine I would like to make contact with fellow researchers who are researching the surnames YOUNGBLOOD AND PHILEN who were in Winn Parish starting about 1850. Anyone with personal letters, diaries, or any material referring to the 1st Regiment, La. Cavalry would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Tommy Civil War Greggory E. Davies Subject: Winn Parish, LA in the War For Southern Independence. I am a lifelong resident of Winn Parish, LA and have for several years been in the process of listing a roster of the men and boys from Winn Parish, LA who served in the War For Southern Independence. I have identified several hundred Winn Parish soldiers, many who served the Union cause, and many who served the Confederacy and deserted to the Union side, only to return to the Confederate side. Winn Parish is noted for its opposition to the war and our parish has often been erroneously referred to as the Free State of Winn. There is no proof that Winn ever "seceded from the South" as many have proclaimed, but there is proof that the parish was without organized government of any kind for a period during and just after the war. I am requesting that anyone exploring this query section who has a veteran of the War For Southern Independence (referred to by some as the Civil War or War Between the States) in their ancestory, to please contact me so I can include their family history notes or information in my work, which I hope to publish in the not too distant future. I certainly do not proclaim to have each and every veteran listed, nor can I prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that all the veterans I have listed are Winn Parish men. I am certain that most of those I have on record were either born in Winn Parish, resided there either before, during or after the war, or belonged to either a Masonic Lodge in the parish or was a member of the David Pierson Camp, United Confederate Veterans. I certainly do not want to publish my work until it is as complete as possible. Greggory E. Davies Winnfield, LA The End of the 1997 queries.
