I am from Winn Parish, LA., and my ancestors settled Wheeling, where the General lived. No doubt in my mind, my folks knew him. He was an interesting character, wealthy owner of 100 slaves, and apparently fathered a mulatto child, as he left her well fixed in his will, illegal in those days to will anything to a slave. Our local genealogy and historical society has a nice web page and we will link to this as soon as I can get word to Annette Womack who is our president. Thanks for your work. It is possible that some post may be lost, etc. Let's just make the best of a bad situation and by the next week maybe we can again run wide open...until we grow too big for our britches again. But here's what you'll see from outside RootsWeb. Over the course of the next week, the main Web server will be down about 5 times for 30 minutes each as we upgrade various subsystems. And the Web server will be down 1 time for about 3 hours as we shift to the new T1. Ordinarily, we do this kind of work at two in the morning, but because of the coordination problems some of this is probably going to happen dead in the middle of the business day and possibly right in the middle of peak hours (Pac Bell likes evening work. go figure) Anyway, I apologize for a little rockiness during the next week. The President, Annette Womack called the meeting to order at 1:12 PM. First, the members were reminded by Annette that all proposed amendments to the bylaws needed to be put on the agenda at least 10 days before the meeting. In addition, all items to be discussed should be put on the agenda by Friday at 6 PM. To accomplish this, telephone or E-Mail Annette. Annette also suggested that the Parliamentarian keep the meetings moving along and not allow digressions from the subject being discussed. I GUESS WE ARE ALL GUILTY OF DIGRESSIONS!! Annette then took some time to discuss our goals for the year and to look back on our accomplishments. The main goals for the New Year are to publish at least one book and to develop continuity of the organization. She reported that as of now, we have 247 members, that include 190 individual memberships and 54 family memberships. We have had 71 renewals (as of Jan. 3) for 1998 already. IF YOU HAVE NOT RENEWED, DO SO NOW!! We printed 250 copies of the journal (Jan. 98 issue) which included 192 member copies, 1 subscription copy to the La. State Library, 7 exchange copies, 14 complimentary copies (advertisers) and 37 additional copies for stock. At our first Genealogy Workshop we had 83 members, speakers, and visitors attend. We have 51 members with online access and 49 subscribers to our "Mailing List" (not all members). We have had 1031 "Hits" on our web page between Nov. 14 and Jan. 1. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I THINK THESE ARE VERY IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS!! Jo Branch then brought up an unpleasant subject. After our Christmas party the library was not as clean as it should have been. We were advised to keep all goodies in the back part of the library. The reading of the minutes from the Annual Meeting on Dec. 8, 1997 was waived. A motion was made by Jo Branch to accept the minutes as recorded and Dale Smith seconded this. A voice vote accepted this motion. I WAS HAPPY ABOUT THIS. Roy Johnson next gave the Treasurer's report and this was accepted also. Gregg Davies made the motion to accept the report and Tommy Willis seconded it. Next was the report on the Executive Meeting that was held just prior to this meeting by the officers. The attending members were asked to ratify the decisions of the board which they did. These decisions included (1) purchase of an accounting computer program "Quick Books" when it is needed (2) Purchase of the computer program "Word Perfect 8" for use in publishing ventures as the journal, etc. (3) to further consider the idea of allowing someone else (Wanda Head) to print and put together the journals.TO EXPLAIN SOME OF THIS--WE ARE TRYING TO ARRANGE THESE ITEMS SO OTHER PEOPLE COULD STEP IN AND DO THE WORK THAT SEVERAL OF OUR MEMBERS HAVE TAKEN ON--SUCH AS THE EDITOR OF THE JOURNAL AND TREASURER. WE ARE ALSO ATTEMPTING TO RELIEVE THEM OF SOME OF THE WORK. Next the officers were offered the floor to introduce themselves and discuss their plans for the year. Jo Branch, 1st VP, discussed the exciting program of speakers already in the works for the coming year and the Conference for 1998 that will be held in Sept. MAKE YOUR PLANS NOW TO ATTEND. JO ALWAYS DOES A BANG UP JOB AND THIS WILL BE NOT AN EXCEPTION!! Next the following officers introduced themselves, Kenneth Martin-2 VP (People) Gregg Davies-3rd VP (Places) Tommy Willis-4th VP (Events) Peggy Beaubouef-Editor of OUR GREAT JOURNAL!! and Earline Martin-Librarian. The members were reminded about the Jan. Field Trip to the Louisiana State Archives on Jan. 24th in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.I HOPE ALL YOU FOLKS THAT LIVE CLOSE ENOUGH WILL JOIN US THERE AS I AM THE HOSTESS FOR THIS EVENT!! The Feb. trip is to the Monroe Genealogy Library and the March trip is to the Shreve Memorial Library. Members were reminded of the upcoming Fifth Sat. Committee Meetings this month at 1:30. Call Annette or Jo for details. Penny Hodges, Peggy Beaubouef and Jerry Caskey volunteered to bring refreshments to the Feb. meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 PM. Earline Martin and Dale Smith won the door prizes. The program consisted of two parts. Three of our members spoke on their family research. These members were Nelda Harrell Fleniken, Carolyn Smith Nugent and L. S. Pickard. The second part of the program was the Youth and Genealogy Program conducted by Jo Branch and assisted by Sue Badeaux (YOURS TRULY). We had 3 enthusiastic young people attend this program, Sarah Porter, Lydia Beaubouef, and Todd Vines.THESE WERE TRULY GREAT KIDS!! Thirty people were in attendance including the following officers: Annette Womack, Sue Badeaux, Jo Branch, Kenneth Martin, Gregg Davies, Tommy Willis, Peggy Beaubouef, and Earline Martin. David Hoffpauir was out of town on business. The new edition of the journal was passed out at the meeting. The others, for folks out of town, will be mailed, so be on the look-out for a truly great journal coming your way. I guess this covers most of what happened Saturday except for the great visiting and networking that went on. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will try to answer them. Go to the Winn archives page connected to the LA Gen Web and check the biography on Dr. Bonnette for possible clues. We still have Bonnettes around this area who were probably related to yours. Barfield, and John Wade Hickman families that arrived in Winn/Grant Parish about 1869. William Taylor, his son-in-law Enoch J. Barfield and other Taylor and Barfield members migrated from Macon County Georgia and are buried at the Old Montgomery Cemetery. My name is James (Jim) Taylor of Irving, Texas and I'm a great nephew of William Taylor. **************************************************************************** LAWINN-D Digest Volume 98 : Issue 8 Today's Topics: #1 [LAWINN-L] BATON ROUGE TRIP ON SAT [Wpgha ] #2 Re: [LAWINN-L] BATON ROUGE TRIP ON ["Greggory E. Jan 24th. The local hostess for this trip is Sue Badeaux. She has been working with the Mr. Morris who came and talked to us last fall. He assigned one of the workers to us and they have made arrangements for us to be there (with special attention!!!) Most of those I have heard from are going to meet there about 9:00 on Saturday. Those active members I've heard from have talked their non- researching spouses into taking off and going, too. Since it is my wedding anniversity, my non-reseaching husband has agreed to "go look around and possibly take me out to supper later on" (if he can talk me into it. I hate eating out!) And some other researchers (such as several La web site coordinators) are going to try to pop in and meet us. "We have a reputation for doing RESEARCH and SHARING! Good reputation, don't you think! Anyway: the rules of the library are: You have to lock your purse, briefcase, etc. in a locker. You can bring notebooks, folders, etc pens, pencils to work with. When you finish, they will count your copies to see what you owe them and then you can get your purse and pay and leave. When you get there, we plan to have a special sign-in sheet so you can be put on the roll as having attended. We will also have special name-tags we want you to wear to identify you as a member of our group. There is a "snack room" available on the premises. For those that don't know how to get there. LOOK AT A MAP. No, just kidding, well, kinda. On the map you will see where I-10 and I-12 split. Immediatly after the split is a street that connects the two interstates called Essen Lane. Turn on to that street and the archives is on that street, near the end where I-10 is. Anyone need a copy of the map, let me know and I'll TRY to scan one in and attach it to you. If you need more details, e-mail Sue at If you can't make this trip, you might want to keep in mind we have trips planned for the the 4th Sat of EVERY month. See your January issue for the list. Feb 's trip will be to the Monroe Genealogy Library on the 28th. We are on "their" calender so, put it on "yours" If you can possible make it. It is a good place to do research and if you haven't been there, go with us to get aquainted and then go back as you can...as Monroe Gen. Library is open 7 days a week! Don't forget we also have planned "2" overnight "get aways" this year. A great time to combine "reseaching & fun" So let your non-active spouse know the dates! (Mine has already made arrangements! Just a short note to all who missed a great trip. We had 11 members who drove down/over/up to the State Archives in Baton Rouge today. We got special treatment by Mr. Morris who gave us a special tour of the building and its special contents (which can NOT be described on this mailing list). We really appreciate him taking the time from his busy schedule to do this for our group. We had several non-researching spouses that came that enjoyed this almost more than the researching spouses! In fact, a couple of times, I almost got ran over by them wanting to see the some of the "early Louisiana" display that is in the process of being put together! If you missed this, you really missed a great tour!!!!!!! Most of the members went out to a nearby resturarant for lunch, but one or two could not be "torn" away from the microfilm reader. There was a fight that broke out at the archives among the WPGHA members over the "death indexes" but we finally learned to take turns (wasn't easy!) We had several very special people "pop in" to say hi. Judy Raffle (see the professional reseachers page) was there helping out with the microfilm copying and generally helping out. Don Johnson, who many can thank for a lot of archive material on the Louisiana web. Barbara Strickland, a parish coordinator talked to us for a few minutes. (Don & Barbara said we had a "real good web site, one of the best!) We also talked to the president of the La Gen Soc and several of their members and got handouts for their workshop in April. We want to give a very special THANK YOU to our local member hostess "Sue Badeaux" who did a wonderful job of being hostess to us. She forgo her research time to help all of us "first-timers." She found several places to suggest for lunch AND she is already working on plans for our second trip to Baton Rouge to the Blue Bonnette Library later this year. A couple of people talked about "staying"over and playing "tourist" on that following Sunday. (This is FUN) It was just generally a real good day. I got some needed research done AND my husband took me "out to dinner" on the way home for our wedding anniversity! In February we are going to Monroe. Make plans to join us. (There will be a research trip on the 4th Sat of every month) More Later (maybe) I'm tired! Annette *****************************************************************************
