Permission to post at this website graciously granted to Greggory E. Davies by Dr. William J. Smith, past-poet laureate of the United States Congress and grandson of William Austin Smith. William Austin Smith was postmaster in Winnfield, LA soon after the War For Southern Independence. Dr. William J. Smith was born in Winnfield, Winn Parish, LA, and is an internationally known author and publisher of several books, poems, children's books, etc. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Smith, I was able to obtain a photocopy of the 1869 Winnfield store ledger kept by William Austin Smith. Current Winn Parish relatives of William Austin Smith and Dr. William J. Smith are Mary Smith Lawrence (daughter of the late Winnfield merchant Norman Smith) and Kelly Lawrence, son of Mary Smith Lawrence. Of interest in the ledger are some of the items frequently purchased. First, there was a lot of whiskey and brandy purchased, no doubt for medicinal purposes since we were and are in the Bible Belt. It appears that many gentlemen would drop by Mr. Smith's store when they were ill as many entries are made for single drinks. Secondly, oysters, sardines, coconuts, and oranges were purchased on a regular basis. Thirdly, on occasion an account would be cleared out after some barter or trade of meal by the bushel was delivered to Mr. Smith. I am not sure where the store was located, no doubt within what we now know as the old town or "historical" district, near the current courthouse block. The Smith family lived on land which is now the extreme eastern end of Winnfield, where Smith Ave. runs north off of E. Lafayette Street near the National Guard Armory and Eric Street (named for Eric Smith) in Cherokee Park. They also had roots in the Gaars' Mill area. Following are the names appearing in the ledger. In parentheses I have posted notes concerning spelling, early known history, etc., and have no doubt omitted some information others know, but I believe I have managed to list every name appearing in the ledger) Abel, J.
