Research is ongoing and hopefully will result in the identification of his forebearers and additional descendants. If anyone can offer corrections or additions to the following information please contact me at 25760 Winter Street, Plaquemine, LA 70764 or Flournoy Walker was born in St. Clair County, Alabama with the birth date ranging from 1817 to 1827. Attempts to identify his parents have been unsuccessful; however two probable brothers have been identified. One very likely brother, James Walker, was born sometime between 1820 and 1826 in Alabama. He was the witness to the marriage of Flournoy and Hetty Waller in 1849 and was enumerated adjacent to Flournoy on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records. James and Flournoy both served in the same unit and company during the Civil War. James married another Hetty, also believed to be a Waller, and they had one daughter, Elnora, born April 1851. Elnora was the first wife of John T. Young and they had two children, Mary and John, before Elnora died October 6, 1875 at the age of 24. Hetty died in 1883 and James died 3 years later on September 12, 1886. One very interesting puzzle surrounding James concerns his niece, Lydia Waller. Lydia was enumerated in his family on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records. In New Hope Cemetery next to the burials of James and Hetty is a tombstone that reads, "Liddy Walker, Wife of James Walker, March 1836-Sept 10th 1886-age 50 years." It is worth noting that James and Lydia died within 2 days of each other. It is not known if this is the same Lydia, who was his niece. Another probable brother was William John Walker, born circa 1817 in Alabama. He married Rachel Waller, born circa 1816 in Georgia, the daughter of William Waller and his wife Elizabeth. Their 9 children, all born in Alabama, included Marian, Lucendia (married James F. Haigler), Lemmuel, James Franklin (married Mary Elizabeth Wilson), Isaiah (married Isabelle Holland), John D. (married Catherine), Lee (married Alice Eugenia Wasson), Felix Thomas (married Mary Elizabeth Jones), and Minerva (married Theodore Jones). William was enumerated on the 1850 Butler County, Alabama census adjacent to Flournoy and James along with several Waller households. William and his family migrated to Winn Parish but tragically William was killed in October of 1873 and buried in Siloam Cemetery. Rachel lived until 1901 and was laid to rest in the same place. Flournoy was tall, red haired and stuttered but was said to sing beautifully. Walker family tradition states that he had 3 wives and 3 sets of children totaling 21 in all. No record has yet been found of a first family. However, there is an intriguing entry on the 1840 census in Jackson County, Alabama of Flour or Flouy Walker, aged 20 to 30, with a female the same age and 3 children under the age of 5. This could very well be Flournoy and his first family, if he was born as early as 1817. If not he would have been too young. It is documented that Flournoy married Hester Waller in Autuaga County, Alabama on January 6, 1849 and was enumerated on the 1850 census in Butler County, Alabama with Hester and 4-month-old William. Enumerated adjacent to him were the households of William Walker, James Walker, Levin Waller, William Waller and Richard Waller. Flournoy and James migrated to Jackson Parish, Louisiana about 1856 appearing on the 1860 Jackson Parish census. Both purchased federal land there about 1860. When the Civil War began, the brothers joined the Confederate Army, serving in Company E of Gray's 28th Louisiana Infantry until the end of the war. Flournoy would later apply for a pension but James died before the pension program began. When the war was over they both moved to the area north of Winnfield in Winn Parish. By then, Flournoy and Hester had 5 living children: William F. M., Eldridge, Irena Lucinda Elizabeth, Franklin T., and Sallie M. Since there was at least a 5-year gap between the birth of William and Eldridge it is highly possible that other children were born and later died during that period. One child, Janie, enumerated on the 1860 census at the age of 5 months, was not on the 1870 census and it is probable that she also died. Flournoy likely suffered the loss of his wife, Hester, circa 1871 since he married Martha A. Southerland about that time. Martha was born between 1846 and 1850 in Louisiana, but her parents have not been identified. Flournoy and Martha promptly began his third set of children, producing Robert Austin, Rolen Y., Estella E., Georgia Missouri "Lula", Felix D., Alma J., Sylvester, and Sidney Benjamin. Martha stated on the 1900 census that she had given birth to 10 children and 7 were still living. This would indicate that 2 children had been born and had died between the census years. Also, since no record of Rolen has been discovered after he was enumerated on the 1880 census, it is probable that he also died. Flournoy died on December 16, 1903 of Brights Disease and was buried in Zion Hill Cemetery in Tannehill. Martha did not die until March 29, 1922 and was buried in the same cemetery, but no tombstones have been located for either one. However, descendants of Flournoy recently erected a Confederate tombstone for him in the cemetery in the area where some of his children and grandchildren were buried. Flournoy used to say that during the Civil War, "I fought and fought and fought and got beat and never got nothing." Perhaps the new tombstone rectifies that situation. In the quest for all his children the following 14 have been definitely identified. We also know that Martha had 2 children who died before gaining adulthood. This accounts for 16 children of record. Two 5-year gaps in children, excluding the Civil War years, have been documented in the birth years of the children of Flournoy and Hester. This could have accounted for at least 2 more children. And the 1840 census may account for 3 more. This would bring the grand total to 21. I am sure about 16 of these children but the other 5 are pure conjecture and their identity still beckons us.
