JOHN CURTIS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL PATRIOTS Date: December 11, 1982 Place: Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans, LA 1st Quarter Winnfield wins the coin toss and elects to receive. Winnfield returns the kickoff to their own 34 yard line. Winnfield loses yardage on the first two plays, setting up third and fourteen, which they convert, now first and ten at midfield. Three plays net eleven yards, moving the ball to the Curtis 39 yard line. Thomas King passes complete to Bennie Mitchell at the Curtis 29 yard line, but Mitchell fumbles. Miracuouslly, the ball bounces straight up in the air into Garlon Powell's arms. Powell breaks a tackle at the Curtis 19 and sprints into the endzone. Extra point by Powell good. WSHS 7-0. Curtis begins a seven play drive that moves them to the Winnfield 26 yard line. The Winnfield defense stuffs Curtis on 4th and three Winnfield takes over on their own 24. On first down, Thomas King runs the option left, keeps the ball and outruns the Curtis contain man. Forty yards downfield, King breaks a tackle at the 19 and again at the 15 before dashing into the endzone. Extra point by Powell, WSHS 14-0. Curtis receives the kickoff and returns it to their own 22 yard line. Three plays net nine yards and Curtis punts. Winnfield takes over on their own 29 and two running plays moves the ball to their 44. On first and ten, Garlon Powell takes a pitch from Thomas King and races 56 yards for a touchdown. Extra point by Powell is blocked. WSHS 20-0 with 1:27 remaining, first quarter. 2nd Quarter WSHS kicks off to Curtis and Curtis moves to near mid-field where their drive stalls. Curtis punts to the Winnfield endzone. Winnfield takes over at their own 20, and a nine-play drive moves the ball to the Curtis 20 before fumbling away the football. Curtis mounts a drive but they fumble at mid-field. Winnfield takes over and stalls at the Curtis 40 and punts, downing the ball at the Curtis 4. Curtis takes over with 6:46 remaining in the half and drives 96 yards in a time consuming 15-play, 6 ® minute drive. Curtis passes four yards for a touchdown with 19 seconds to go in the half. Conversion good. WSHS 20-Curtis 7. /Curtis kicks off and Winnfield takes a knee at its own 20 to run out the clock. Half-time: WSHS 20 John Curtis 7. 3rd Quarter Curtis receives the second half kickoff and drive to mid-field in six plays but on 4th and long, they punt. Winnfield returns the punt to their own 20. Facing 3rd and 7, WSHS converts on a ten yard pass play but fumbles. They recover their own fumble after the ball had rolled four yards backward and are forced to punt. Curtis receives the punt at their own 6 and fumbles. They not only recover the fumble, but almost break the return for a touchdown. Returning to the Winnfield 40. Curtis is called for clipping on the return and the ball is returned all the way back to the 7 yard line. A time consuming, ten play drive moves the ball to the Winnfield 26. On first down, Curtis mishandles the pitch and loses 8 yards on the fumble. The next two plays net ten yards, and 4th down at the Winnfield 24, Curtis' pass into the endzone is batted down by a Winnfield defender. Winnfield takes over at their own 20 at the end of the 3rd quarter, and is forced to punt. The Winnfield offense only ran six plays in the third quarter. Curtis receives Winnfield's punt and begins possession at their 36. Two plays net 7 yards and on 3rd and 3, at their own 43, Curtis rambles for 15 yards and a first down at the Winnfield 42. The quarter ends. WSHS 20-Curtis 7. 4th Quarter On first down, Curtis loses yardage setting up 2nd and 12. Curtis completes a 22 yard pass to the Winnfield 22. Theif first down play nets seven yards, but Winnfield's All-State linebacker Marcel Mills breaks his arm on the play and has to leave the game. On 2nd down, Curtis sweeps right and runs 15 yards for a touchdown. Extra point good. WSHS 20-Curtis 14, 10:25 remaining in the game. Winnfield receives the Curtis kickoff and begins play at the 25. On second down, Winnfield breaks a big running play past mid-field, but Curtis forces a fumble at their own 45. A huge scramble forces the ball out of bounds at the Curtis 38, Winnfield ball, 1st and 10. The Tigers stall and are forced to punt. The punter kicks the ball off the side of his foot and it rolls out of bounds fifteen yards down the field. Curtis' ball on their own 23 with 9:00 remaining in in the game. Curtis nets five yards on two plays and on 3rd and 5 Curtis breaks a 17 yard run for a first down, but fumbles at the end of the play. Winnfield recovers at the Curtis 45 with just over 7:00 remaining. On first down, Powell runs for 18 yards to the Curtis 15 but is forced from the game with leg cramps. Perry Myles runs three straight times for eight yards, setting up 4th and goal at the Curtis 7 yard line. Winnfield calls time out and elects to attempt a 25 yard field goal. Never having kicked a field goal, Garlon Powell returns to the game and boots the ball through the upright. WSHS 23-Curtis 14, 4:22 remaining in the game. Curtis takes the kickoff and returns it to their own 47. Six plays, one being a 43 yard pass play, moves the ball to the Winnfield 8. The Winnfield defense stops Curtis' first two running plays. On 3rd and goal, Gary Irvin sacks the Curtis quarterback for a loss of 11 yards, moving the ball back to the Winnfield 15. Curtis attempts a 33 yard field goal with 2:42 remaining, kick wide. Winnfield takes over on its own 20 and no one from Winnfield is able to remain in their seat. Three plays fail to gain a first down and Winnfield is forced to punt. With a minute to play, Curtis takes over at mid-field and time runs out. Winnfield becomes 1982 AA State Champions.
