All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** >From the October 3, 1952 Winnfield News-American Winnfield Male and Female School Opened in 1885 The "Southern Sentinel" for Friday, October 2, 1885, contained an ad proclaiming the opening of the "Winnfield Male and Female School." "First term opens September 14, 1885, and closed on Friday, the 16th of January, 1886. The second term opens Monday, the 19th of January, 1886 and closed on Friday, the 29th day of June, 1886." The principal was Professor Edward Davies, and the assistant teacher was Mrs. Edward Davies. Mrs. Ida Milling was head of the department of music. Tuition was $ 2 per month for primary students, $ 2.50 for intermediates, $ 3 for "sub freshman and academic students, $ 4 for freshmen and sophomores, $ 5 for a special bookkeeping course, and $ 4 for a music course. Trustees of this "School of Science, Literature, and Art" were Dr. J. F. Kelley, president, W. A. Little, secretary, W. J. Sowers, R. L. Tannehill, and S. M. Brian.
