All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: May 29, 1947 Winn Parish Enterprise Menefee Post Office Has Been Authorized Applications For Postmastership Are Now Being Received Establishment of a new post office at Menefee, site of the new Tremont Mill near Gorhamtown, three miles east of Winnfield, has been authorized by the post office department, P. Hugh Mercer, Winnfield Postmaster, said this week. A notice has been posted at the post office in Winnfield stating that the Postmaster General has directed application of Postmaster at Menefee, Winn Parish, LA. Menefee is now both the post office and railway station name of the community known as Gorhamtown or East Winnfield. When operations at the new Tremont Lumber Company mill begin, the present population of 500 persons will be increased to almost 2,000, it is estimated. Mr. Mercer said that postal inspectors first considered making the Menefee office a branch of the Winnfield post office, but after investigation decided to establish a separate post office at Menefee.
