Company C, Winn Rifles and Company I, Caldwell Guards, 3RD Regiment, Louisiana Infantry CSA Preface: The writer has been searching for years to find CSA service records for grandfather George Thomas McFarland, who is buried at Zion Hill Cem with a CSA marker denoting Co I 3 La Inf. Also for any records on J D (James David) Warner, great-grandfather and father of Nancy Catherine Warner McFarland (wife of George T. McFarland). All are buried at Zion Hill. 1934 Pension list for CSA veterans widows notes Nancy C Greer - widow of George T McFarland - Co I 3RD La Inf. CSA tombstone at Zion Hill notes Co O Crescent La Inf for David J Warner; initial service roster for 1861 shows him in Co C 3RD La Inf; he may have joined another unit after 1861; unable to verify. 1934 pension list shows Emma A. Deen, widow of J E Deen and Eva E Moss, widow of Thomas A. Moss, both noted as C/3 La Inf. Neither were on the roster list following; cannot explain omission. There were many residents of Winn Parish that served the CSA. Existing entries on Winn Parish Archives note some personnel of 8TH La Calvary, 27TH, 28TH, 12TH Regiments and Cos C,D,F,G and I of 3RD La Inf. Extractions from the reference source cited above noted that: Company C roster notes many early names from Winn, Jackson,Grant, Bienville and Natchitoches local area. Capt Pierson was from Jackson Parish area. Great-grandfather J D (James David) Warner is on Co C roster. Grandfather George T McFarland is on Co I roster. Other Winn CSA veterans on the full regimental roster include: John Quinalty Co F, W H Martin Co D, Thomas LaMond Co G, William I Bonnette Co I and D F Dunn Co J. Full roster for Co C Winn Rifles has been transcribed; other companies have not. Casualty lists for Co C and Co I are listed. Chronology: 4/21/1861: Governor Thomas O. Moore (LA) issued a call for 5,000 volunteers. 5/1861: The 3RD Reg. La Inf organized and officers elected: Col Louis Hebert, Lt Col SM Hyams, Maj W F Tunnard Comprised of the following companies: Co A : Iberville Grays , total 87 men Co B : Morehouse Guards , total 124 men Co C : Winn Rifles , total 89 men, Capt David Pierson Co D : Pelican Rangers, No.2 , total 77 men Co E : Morehouse Fencibles , total 78 men Co F : Shreveport Rangers , total 115 men Co G : Pelican Rangers, No.1 , total 157 men Co H : Monticello Rifles , 107 men Co I : Caldwell Guards , total 116 men, Capt. Went by steamboat and land march to Little Rock, Ark in 5/61. Battle of Oak Hill (Bloody Hill) near Springfield, Mo on 8/10/1861. 9/1861: Camp Johnson, Ark 10/1861: Went to Camp Benjamin near Carthage, Mo for winter camp. Stayed there until 2/1862. Battle of Elk Horn (Pea Ridge) near Bentonville and Van Buren, Ark on 3/07/1862.No food for 4 days - blizzard and freeze. Battle of Snyder's Bluff, Ark in 4/1862. Left Poteau, Ark 4/28/1862; arrived at Tupelo, Miss by 5/08/1862. Battle of Iuaka, Miss on 9/19/1862. Battle of Corinth, Miss on 10/03-04/1862. Went to Vicksburg, Miss in 11/1862 for Siege of Vicksburg from 5/18/1863 to 7/04/1863. Vicksburg surrendered and all CSA taken prisoner. All prisoners forced to take Oath of Parole. Prisoners taken to Enterprise, Miss 7/11/1863. Members were sent to Demopolis, Ala or Alexandria, La. 12/1863: paroled prisoners were exchanged and members of the 3, 17, 21, 26, 27, 28, 31 La regiments were consolidated into one regiment known as 22ND La Heavy Artillery and sent to Mobile, Ala. After Mobile fell, remaining members not taken POW were sent to Camp Boggs, Shreveport La and mustered out of service in 4/1865.
