Uncle Ben McGuffee, Confederate veteran of Harrisonburg, who recently celebrated his 92nd birthday reminisced recently on the evacuation of the Harrisonburg fort, historic stronghold of the Civil War. Uncle Ben is the grandfather of Mr. E. L. McGuffee, employee of the Shaw- Carter Company here and is hale and hearty in spite of his advanced years. The occasion for recalling the first evacuation of the fort was the closing of a CCC camp which had been occupying the site of the fort for several months. Uncle Ben told of the Confederate forces leaving the fort on September 5, 1863 a short time after his enlistment in the southern armies in Brookhaven, Miss. A force under Lieutenant Colonel George M. Logan was occupying the fort and Mr. McGuffee's force was hurrying to reinforce the garrison when the Union forces seized the stronghold. In 1876 Mr. McGuffee moved to Aimwell, La., where he has since made his residence. At this time he is the only surviving veteran of the War Between the States in Catahoula Parish. He went unscathed through several engagements of the war only to lose his right eye about 15 years ago when a large nail he was driving flew up and struck him.
