This file may not be uploaded to any other website or used by any person(s) in a mailing list message other than the USGenWeb Archives, Winn Par., LA without the express written permission of the submitter.*********************************************** Deposition Case of Mary Branch, No 617622 On this 18 day of June 1902,at near Gaars Mills county of Winn State of La. before me S.S.Galiher,aspeical examiner of Pensions, personally appeared W.Branch,who,being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension,deposes and says:I am 51 years of age former residence near and post office address is Gaars Mills,La.I am a son of the claimant and soldier and I am the oldest child.I remember when the civil war began,and remember many events that transpired in this neighborhood during the war.I know that my father kept to his work during the war until he could do so no longer and not expect to be captured by the confid erates.He then took to the woods and kept up that place for about sixteen months when he came home and was helping me to do the planting when a squad of confiderate cavalry came and caught him and carried him off.He was gone from home between ten and fifteen days and returned he had a furlough of five or six days and he told me that he got the furlough for the purpose,so he told them of straightening up his business and getting his clothing and then he would come back.After he reached home he stayed home until his furlough expired,but in the meantime he was trying to get up a crowd to go to the union army,and after his furlough expired he kept to the woods until he,with the others left for Alexandria La to join the union army.I think that my father left here in April 1863 and he did not return here until July 1865.My father died June 12,1895 and my mother has not remarried nor lived with any man as his wife sence his death.The soldier left at his death 120 acres of poor land,a pair of Jennies,and five or six head of cattle.At the time my father died this piece of land would not have brought at a sale over one hundred and twenty five dollars.My mother has had no means of support since the date of filing her claim for pension except what she derived from the sale of the personal property of said above,after paying her indebtedness.Since the land was sold my mother has been supported by her children as lives with one awhile and then goes to another one.I have heard my statement read and my answers have been correctly recorded.
