This file may not be uploaded to any other website or used by any person(s) in a mailing list message other than the USGenWeb Archives, Winn Par., LA without the express written permission of the submitter.*********************************************** Deposition Case Of Mary Branch-----No 617622 On this 21 day of June,1902 at near Hickory Valley,county of Winn state of La.before me S.S.Galiher,a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeard James M.Thornton,who being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension,deposes and says:I am 69 years of age farmer,residence near and post office address is Hickory Valley,La.I had known Theophilus Branch for about fifteen years before the civil war I know that this man did not marry in this parish prior to his marriage to Mary Dyess.I knew Branch during all the civil war as I was with him in co c 1 La cav Scouts.I am satisfied that Branch Was not in the confederate service.I knew of a captain Smith sending his men through this part of the country catching men who would not go to the confederate army.I do not think that his was a regular service,but he was employed in gathering up men to be placed in regular organizations.I am satisfied that Branch did not voluntarily go into the confederate service,but he might have been cought up and kept for a short time but he did not have service.I myself was a member of co c 28 la inf.confederate service.I have heard my statement read and my answers have been correctly recoreded. witness his Sam L Thornton James M x Thornton Elba S.Thornton mark Sworn to and subscribed before me this 21 day of June 1902 and I certify that the contents were fully made known to deponent before signing S.S.Galiher
