They traveled to Ft. Smith, AR, fought in the Battle of Wilson's Creek (MO), Battle of Pea Ridge (AR), Battle of Farmington (TN), Battle of Iuka (MS), Battle of Corinth (MS), Battle of Haynes' Bluff (MS), Battle of Snyder's Bluff (MS), and the siege at Vicksburg (MS). Toward the end of the war they were stationed at the Louisiana capital of Shreveport and might have been the last regiment to disband and vacate the city. This following information is without doubt an incomplete work and it is highly probable that some Winn Parish men/boys who served in the Winn Rifles are omitted. It was not uncommon for those living in outlying areas of Winn Parish to have enlisted into units from neighboring parishes which is certainly the case with Winn Parish men/boys serving in other Third Louisiana companies. Lost or destroyed records were also abundant concerning Confederate records. A Southern Record: The History of the Third Regiment Louisiana Infantry was written c. 1866 by W. H. Tunnard who served in the Third Louisiana as a sergeant. Tunnard's work was edited by the great Civil War historian, Edwin C. Bearss and the following information is a combination of both their work and that of Dr. Arthur W. Bergeron, Jr., former Director of the Louisiana State Park System and currently Director of Pamplin State Park, Virginia. Dr. Bergeron's ancestor, William A. S. "Sandy" Hogan, served as a sergeant in the 28th Louisiana Infantry, Co. K, and was from Winn Parish. Dr. Bergeron's work, Guide to Louisiana Confederate Military Units 1861-1865 is priceless and gives a detailed summary of the movement and history of the various Louisiana military units. It is common in researching Confederate soldiers to find that they served in more than one outfit. Third Louisiana Infantry, Company C, Winn Rifles Officers: Pierson, David. Captain, Major, Lt. Col.
