David Collins Writes About Vietnam War

(The following is a letter written to Mrs. Edria Bolton who had it published
in the Enterprise.  Col. Collins was a 1941 graduate of Winnfield High School
and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Collins, Rt. 2, Winnfield)

Dear Edria,

I was delighted to receive your letter.  The reunion last year was a huge
success due in a large part to the hard work by you and a few of the others in
Winnfield.

My situation has changed considerably since I last saw you.  I was promoted
shortly after the reunion and soon thereafter received orders assigning me to
duty in Vietnam.  I arrived in March of this year and am stationed at Nha
Trang which is located on the east coast of Vietnam just a few miles north of
Cam Ranh Bay.  My job is commander of an Air Operations Group which has three
squadrons, with six different types of airplanes.  The work we do is of such a
nature that I can't discuss any details of either our mission or flying
activities.  Suffice it to say it's an extremely fascinating business.

The area around Nha Trang is considered relatively secure.  Normally the VC
will attempt a mortar attack on the Air Base about once a month.  They usually
come at night and other than causing everyone to lose a few hours sleep,
result in very little damage.

My tour in Vietnam is half completed and like everyone here I'm looking
forward to getting home and being with my family again.  The most welcome
thing any military man in Vietnam can receive is mail.  Your newsletter was
greatly appreciated.  Please give my best to all the classmates you see.
