According to P. K. Abel through whom the application for pension was made, Mrs. Drake is the oldest Confederate widow ever to make application for pension from this parish. Mrs. Drake is the widow of James Drake, who enlisted in Company C, 12th Louisiana Regiment, here, August, 1861, and died at his home in this parish while at home on furlough November, 1861. Mrs. Drake was born in 1826, and was 36 years old when the Civil War started in 1860. As a widow of a Confederate veteran, Mrs. Drake has been eligible for a pension for many years. However, she states that as she had been in good health and until recently able to make her own living, she did not feel like it was right for her to seek a pension. Even now, she is seeking a pension largely at the solicitation of her friends, who realize that she should have been given a pension many years ago.
