S. Flag on the Iwo Jima calls to remembrance that we have in Winnfield a young man who was present at this flag raising. Felix Jerre "Buddy" Mercer, Radioman Class 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. Felix J. Mercer, Sr., enlisted in the Navy, trained with the Army, Navy, and Marines, and served in a beach battalion of the amphibious forces which made the first landing on Iwo Jima. He was also in the invasion of Okinawa. He served nearly three years during World War II. Felix is now residing with his wife and three children on King Street, Winnfield.
