George A. Stokes A letter from 1st Lt. George A. Stokes, paratrooper, who is in a hospital in England recovering from a wound in the arm received in the invasion of France, informs his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Alwin Stokes, that he has been awarded the Purple Heart medal. In another letter to his sister, Lt. Stokes reports that he was among the first paratroopers to land in France and that he and his men fought like wildcats for several days killing as many Germans as they could. He said, "I didn't dream that I would ever see so many dead men."
