Dement Hughes Among the Cadets graduating from West Point, United States Military Academy, on June 1st, 1943, was Hershel Dement Hughes, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Hughes of 519 Main Street, Pineville, La., former residents of Winnfield. Receiving his appointment to the Military Academy from Rep. A. Leonard Allen of the Eighth Louisiana District, Hughes graduated from the Winnfield High School and attended Louisiana College for two years and the Louisiana Polytechnic Institute at Ruston, La., for one year before going to West Point. During his first class year at West Point, he was a Cadet Sergeant. He turned out for football, boxing, and lacrosse, winning a major "A" in football and also a monogram. Hughes was also a member of the Cadet Chapel Choir. He received his commission in the Air Force. The graduating class, numbering 514, the largest ever to graduate from the Military Academy, is graduating one year ahead of schedule.
