Lieutenant Robeline Sheppard Is Winn's Feminine Member of U. S. Army

Parish Has 549 Whites And 92 Coloreds In Service Branches


Of Winn Parish's personnel of 642 in the various branches of Uncle Sam's
services, Lt. Mary Robeline Sheppard, daughter of Mrs. B. F. Sheppard of
Joyce, is the only woman listed in the parish selective service office as
being in service.  Lt. Sheppard is stationed with the regular army at the
Station Hospital at Camp Livingston, La.

A graduate of Winnfield High School, Lt. Sheppard received her training at the
Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, between 1936 and 1939.  She received her
Lieutenant's commission on February 17, 1941 and entered the regular army.

Besides Lt. Sheppard, the Winn Parish army personnel is made up of 549 whites
and 92 colored men.  Thus far, the parish has not represented in the WAACS or
the WAVES but it has representatives in every other branch of Uncle Sam's
services.  

Winnfield leads thelist of white men in service with a total of 191, according
to selective service records.  Totals of men from various sections of the
parish follow: 
Winnfield Route 1, 25; Winnfield Route 2, 39; Winnfield Route 3, 21; Winnfield
Route 4, 22:  Sikes, 59; Dodson, 69; Calvin, 17; Tullos, 14; Olla, Route 1, 7;
Montgomery, 9; Joyce, 12; St. Maurice, 4; Goldonna, 17; Atlanta, 25; and
miscellaneous addresses, 17.

It has been reported, but has not been placed on the records of the selective
service office that Miss Veo Cockerham, Winnfield, route 4, is stationed at
Camp Claiborne as a nurse with the Reserve Commission.  She is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Allen Cockerham.
