Submitter also has Civil War service records of David J Warner and Mexican War records of his brother, Jeremiah David Warner (separate submission). These brothers were among the few Winn Parish pioneers that served in both wars. Warner also spelled Worner on some records. (David J Warner b. Jul 10 1822 SC - d. Warner) Page 2: War of 1846 with Mexico - Declaration of soldier for service pension. State of Louisiana, Parish of Caldwell On July 11, 1887 David J Warner filed this affidavit with Clerk of 4th District Court, attesting that he, aged 65 a resident of Winn Parish, was the David J Warner who served as a Private in Company A commanded by Captain H.G. Mercer in the 6th Regiment of La Volunteers in the War with Mexico; that he volunteered at Columbia, La on/about the 10th day of May 1846 for the term of 6 months and was honorably discharged at New Orleans on the 22nd day of August 1846. That since his discharge he has resided; in Caldwell parish up to 1852, since which time have resided in Winn Parish State of La. The following was his description at enlistment: rather light complexion. Auburn hair & gray eyes. That some of the officers and soldiers of his company were: H G Mercer, N L Chaffor lstLt, TS Crawford 2Lt and BG Grenshaw 1Sgt. He makes this declaration & appoints George Wear of Columbia as attorney. He declared that he has made application for bounty land of 120 acres and 40 acres; warrants made in 1855 - does not remember date or number. He made his x mark on signature line. Two witnesses: signatures of Jesse J Butler & E M Noble Also appeared Jesse J. Butler aged 64 years residing in Caldwell and E M Noble aged 60 years residing in Caldwell; swore that they have known David J Warner for 40 years and more; that he served under Captain HG Mercer and that they served with him in same company and regiment. Page 3: Mexican War Pension - Act of January 29, A.D. 1887 Declaration of Widow for Pension This affidavit was done by his widow on Mar 2 1896; 4th Dist court: That she was the widow of David J Worner who served as a private in Co A of 6th Regt la Volunteers. That she was married under her name of Louisiana R Crissup to said husband David J Worner in November 1866; that she lived with him until his death on 22 Feb 1896 when he died in Caldwell Parish. For proof of service she cites his affidivit and cert. #10801. She states she is 50 years old & was born 31 August 1846 in Union parish. Was disabled by reason of kidney trouble and prolasus uteri. States that she had not filed for pension before; her husband was getting a pension under Cert # 10801 She made her X mark. Witnesses signing were: Joseph Smith and Joseph T Fox. JM Abel Clerk. This affadivit was filed by JT Wallace for her claim. Witnessed by: W S Peters & W W Jordan; she made her X Page 4: General Affidavit of W S Peters & W M Jordan Done before Henry Bernstein; They state their ages as 46 years and that they knew David J Warner for 35 years; he is dead; he died on 22 Feb 1896; they were at his burial on the 24th day & assisted to bury him; they knew his widow; she has not remarried; W M Jordan avers that he was present and witnessed the marriage of David J Warner and Louisiana Isabella Crissup- surviving widow of David J Warner dead which was on the 30 Nov 1866. Page 9: General Affidavit of Lewis M. Tannehill dated 1 Oct 1896 He knew David J Warner and his first wife, Elizabeth Jane Warner who died in the spring of 1865. Saw her sick, saw her die, saw her buried. (Submitter note: From Caldwell Parish Records A-112; David J Warner and Elizabeth J Branch were married 20 May 1849 by J Wade Hough, JP in Caldwell Parish. Page 12 Form 3-044 Application for Reimbursement Filed by James Richard (JR) Warner on 19 March 1930; claim for reimbursement from the accrued pension for expenses paid in the last sickness and burial of Mrs. Louisiana R Warner who died Jan 13 1930 and was buried at Zion Hill Cemetery seven miles North of Winnfield. Info on app. Includes: Decedent was the widow of a soldier. There was no insurance paid. Pensioner left no property. Cause of death: She had been paralyzed for more than two years and died with pneumonia. She became helpless on Sept 15 1929, until her death and contracted pneumonia about one week before she died. Name of attending physician: Dr. J. F. Faith, Winnfield La. Names of persons nursing pensioner during last sickness: Mrs. NC Greer, Mrs. Lela Box and Mrs. JR Warner all of Winnfield. She was removed to the home of Mrs. NC Greer in August 1929, to be cared for and where she remained until she died. Statement of expenses of last sickness and burial of deceased pensioner. Warner acted as nurses. Both statements filed March 19 1930. Page 14: Statement of Mrs. N C Greer that she is person who appears on affidavits above; that she is known as Nancy Katherine Greer or Kate. Filed 3 April 1930. This concludes transcription of Mexican War service/pension records for David James Warner and his widow. Footnote: No record has been found of David J Warner filing for a Civil War pension before he died in 1896. He was getting a Mexican War pension at date of death. Archive records note that his widow filed a pension application for Civil War benefits on Jan 18 1929 as Application # 13489. It was allowed on March 12 1929 as first class quarterly allowance. Based on service in Co C 3 La Inf from May 17 1861 to Nov 3 1863 and Co. O Consolidated Crescent Regt until parole on June 6 1865.His widow was drawing both pensions at date of her death.
