(UPI)—The “pea patch” farm home of the late Gov. Earl Long of Louisiana burned this week. The modest, tin-roofed frame house was vacant and contained no furniture. Firemen battled the flames for three hours but the house was a total loss with damage estimated at $5,000. “Uncle Earl” often spoke warmly of his “little pea patch” at Winnfield. He would often go there to rest from campaigning, put on work clothes, a floppy hat and dig in his garden. Long, who died Labor Day, 1860, is buried on the farm property, not far from the house.
