Knight is a veteran of World War II. He is married and has two children. Present members of the marshal's force are Knight and D. C. Machen on daytime duty and J. M. Kelley and John Poisso, night deputies. In a statement Tuesday, Knight said, "I appreciate everything people have done for me, and the cooperation given me during my period of service. I plan to do my best to treat everyone alike, and I solicit your future cooperation." A letter from the Winnfield Mayor and Board of Aldermen to Governor Earl Long recommending Knight as Marshal, follows: "November 9, 1951 Honorable Earl K. Long, Governor, State of Louisiana Baton Rouge, La. Dear Governor Long, As you know, Mr. Gamble Carter, Marshal of the Town of Winnfield, Louisiana, died suddenly on October 31, 1951, and since that date Mr. Julius Knight, senior deputy, has been acting as marshal of the Town of Winnfield. On Tuesday night, November 6, 1951, the Mayor and Board of Alderman of the Town of Winnfield met and considered the applications of various individuals who were seeking the appointment to serve out the balance of Mr. Carter's term as Marshal. After giving due and serious consideration to all candidates, the Board of Aldermen unanimously decided and voted to recommend that you appoint Mr. Julius Knight as Marshal of the Town of Winnfield to complete the unexpired portion of Mr. Carter's term of office. Mr. Knight has been a resident of Winnfield approximately 14 years. He is married and has two children and has served as deputy marshal for more than two years. In this capacity he has won the confidence of the people of Winnfield and we know that his appointment will meet the approval of the vast majority of our citizens. We therefore take pleasure in recommending to you Mr. Julius Knight and respectfully request that you give him your favorable consideration and appoint him to serve as Marshal for the unexpired term of Mr. Carter. Thanking you and with kindest regards, we remain, Sincerely yours, D. C. Allen, Mayor Harper Terrill, Alderman H. E. Machen, Alderman Dudley P. Shell, Alderman J. G. Russell, Jr., Alderman John W.
