George S. Long of Pineville, formerly of Winnfield, was sworn in this week as a member of Congress. Dr. Long was elected representative from the Eighth district, in elections last year. He succeeds A. Leonard Allen, who retired after 16 years in office. Dr. Long's staff was announced earlier as follows: Mrs. Lois Harrington, former secretary to Rep. Caleb Boggs of Delaware; Miss Jewel Tyson, personal secretary; David Bell of Winnfield; and Leroy Chandler, a defeated candidate for the national post. Chandler will serve as district representative for Long with headquarters in Alexandria. Dr. Long is the fourth member of his family to serve in Congress. His nephew, Russell B. Long is now a member of the Senate from Louisiana; his brother, the late Huey P. Long, served as Senator and governor of Louisiana; and Mrs. Huey Long served briefly as Senator after her husband's death. Earl Long, another brother, is a former state governor.
