Lyons, Sr., prominent Shreveport businessman and civic leader who practiced law in Winnfield for a few years following World War I, has announced his candidacy for governor on the Republican ticket. Lyons was born in Abbeville, Louisiana, and reared in Melville, in St. Landry Parish. He graduated from LSU and Tulane, served in the Army in World War I, practiced law here and in Shreveport and currently is in the oil business in Shreveport. He was a law partner of Winnfield Attorney John J. Peters and is a first cousin of Mrs. Peters. Lyons stated that he is running for three basic reasons: to make sure that there will be an anti-Kennedy candidate in the general election March 3; to help develop a strong two-party system in Louisiana; and to answer the call of younger conservatives who seek only good government in Louisiana and constitutional government in America. Lyons said he would work for election of Barry Goldwater for president.
