Mayor Henderson has proclaimed Saturday, May 30, 1981 as RICHIE MERCER DAY. Also present (in the photo) is Mrs. Annette Carpenter, who is helping organize a benefit show for Richie. A benefit show is being held for Richie on Saturday, May 30, 1981 at 7:30 p.m. at the Winnfield Senior High School Auditorium. The Leroy James Band will be donating their services for the show. Tickets are $ 2 for adults and $ 1 for children. Richie was born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect that has left him paralyzed from his waist down. He is under the care of doctors at the Oschner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans and returns every two or three months for checkups and x-rays. Thus far, Richie has undergone five surgeries to help keep his medical problems under control. Richie is a student at the Winn Parish Pre-School Handicapped Program at the Winn Parish Career Center. A Richie Mercer Fund has been established at the Bank of Winnfield. Anyone wishing to make donations may do so.
