Robinson Elected Sheriff In First Primary Winn Sheriff C. M. Robinson was elected to succeed himself by a 214 vote majority over three other candidates in the Democratic primary Tuesday. His total vote was 3,223, according to complete but unofficial returns. Running second was G. C. McCarty with 1,606; Hardy Smith, Jr., third with 1,201; and C. R. Mixon, fourth, with 202. This is Robinson's second term as Sheriff of Winn. He was elected in 1948, replacing former Sheriff Bryant Sholars. The "Preacher" carried all of Winnfield's precincts by a substantial majority, and in most country boxes was far in the lead. C. R. Mixon carried one box, the Couley precinct in Ward Five, and Smith was high at Hebron in Ward Three. McCarty held a one-vote edge over Sheriff Robinson in the Shady Grove box, Ward Three. The Sheriff carried the rest of the 31 precincts. "Preacher" Robinson, who pastors the Downtown Assembly of God Church in Winnfield, is known all over the state as being the only minister in the gospel holding such a position. He is known also for his fight against liquor in the Parish.
