Wilson Candidate For Governor Fifteen Hundred Delegates Attend Political Meeting At Alexandria Judge Riley J. Wilson, of Ruston, congressman from the Fifth Louisiana district, was selected and called to become a candidate for governor by a statewide conference of men and women held in Alexandria Friday afternoon, attended by approximately 1500 delegates, representing most of the parishes of the state. It was the first time in the history of the state that women sat with the men and participated in the statewide gubernatorial confab. Former State Senator Howard B. Warren of Shreveport and Ruston was made the permanent chairman and delivered the keynote speech of the day. The concrete result of the day was to adopt a resolution by W. H. Hodges, Jr., of Elm Grove, Bossier Parish, calling Mr. Wilson to the post and naming a committee to notify him and receive the reply. Judge Wilson is a native of Winn Parish, born near Coldwater and received his early education at Arcadia, La. in the old Arcadia College. He taught for several years at Beech Creek, in Winn Parish, Olla, and Harrisonburg. While at Harrisonburg he studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was elected as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1898 and also elected District Attorney and later Judge of his district. In 1915 he was elected to represent his district in Congress and has been there ever since. (This particular governor's race was unique in that it furnished two candidates from Winn Parish, the other being Huey Long, who won the election)
