Hickman, affectionately known as "Uncle Doc", celebrated his 100th birthday Saturday afternoon, October 24, 1981, at Parkview Nursing Home in Winnfield. Hickman, who has been a resident of the home since 1975, was feted with a surprise birthday party attended by a large number of nursing home residents and personnel, his son of Montgomery, and other relatives, and many friends. The honoree had a beautiful birthday cake decorated with "Happy 100th Birthday, Uncle Doc" motif. Ice cream, cookies, and punch were also served, and the honoree received many gifts. The Ardis McElroy band group provided music. Mr. Hickman, born in Montgomery on October 24, 1887, is spry and lively and tells interesting tales of having gone west to work on the railroad, returning to his native Montgomery to farm and work in the lumber mills operated by steam engines. He is the father of two sons, Bernard Hickman of Montgomery, and the late M. D. Hickman, Jr., whom he outlived. He is also the grandfather of Mrs. Carolyn Miley (his oldest granddaughter) and the great grandfather of her two children, Kirk and Leah Long, of Winnfield. Included with the large number of guests attending the birthday celebration were his one surviving sister, 88 year old Mrs. A. M. Barnes, her daughter, Mrs. Jerry Stroud, and Mrs. Stroud's daughter and her two children, Mrs. Vicki Vicki Grantadams, Kylie and Brock, all of Winnfield.
