R. Smith James Riley Smith has observed numerous Father's Days, but not many have had the privilege as he has at this time of living within "hollering" distance of six of his seven children. In the above picture Mr. Smith is seated in front of his daughters and son, who are, left to right, Mrs. C. M. Riley, Julius Smith, Mrs. Andrew Maloy, Mrs. E. C. Womack, Mrs. Jimmie Lasyone, Mrs. Vernon Keen, and Mrs. Willie Broadway. His son, Julius, resides in Winnfield where he is now employed as radio operator for the city police station. All six daughters live within a twenty acre radius of their father, who resides in the home of his widowed daughter, Mrs. Jimmie Lasyone. Mr. Smith was born April 24, 1879, a few miles down the road from his present home. His parents were Pat and Rhoda Smith, pioneer farmers of the Jordan Hill Community. At an early age Mr. Smith was baptized in the Corinth Baptist Church. He is a senior deacon, and one of the first to serve the Big Creek Baptist Church, which is near his present home. During his lifetime only illness has kept him from attending his church. Mr. Smith's life's work was farming. It was not until recently that he had to give up his garden work. At this time he walks with the aid of a walker, but he is very alert and cheerful for a man of his age. His wife, Emma Jordan Smith, died April 28, 1971. They had 26 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
