Martin in a ceremony performed by Justice of the Peace J. B. Wilson at Sanders Chapel Methodist Church near Calvin. Last Sunday, September 18, Mr. and Mrs. Martin celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at open house in their home on West Lafayette Street. This was indeed a unique day for Mr. and Mrs. Martin. The observed three momentous occasions, all on the same day. It was their 50th wedding anniversary, it was his 74th birthday, and they became great grandparents for the first time that day. The new arrival is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Martin of Calvin. At the time they were married Mr. Martin was operating a cotton gin at Gansville. They had no time for a honeymoon because it was the busy, ginning season. It was back to work the next day for Mr. Martin, and the bride was also very busy getting her new house in shape. "We've had a peaceable, happy life," was Mr. Martin's comment. "The day we married we drove to the church and home in a horse and buggy." "Yes sir," he said, "there have been a lot of changed in this old world in the last 50 years." Mr. Martin's life long vocation has been cotton ginning, carpentry work, and grocery store work. To their union were born five children, four of whom survive. All were present for the Golden Wedding celebration last Sunday. They are Cecil Martin of Calvin, Oswald, Alton, and Dalton of Winnfield. Last Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Martin graciously received their guests in the entrance hall, and all were registered by Miss Ellen Faye Clark of Hodge, Mrs. J. W. McLean, sister of Mrs. Martin, ushered them into the reception rooms which were decorated with attractive arrangements of gold chrysanthemums, giant mums, and yellow roses. For this occasion Mrs. Martin was attired in a lovely fall model of wine crepe and wore a shoulder corsage of golden Pom Pom mums and gold ribbon. In the living room the mantle was banked with greenery and golden button Pom Poms. On each end gold candle sticks held golden candles. The dining table was laid with an imported lace cloth which was outlined with fern and caught at each corner with a lovely bouquet of yellow mums tied with golden metallic ribbon. At one end of the table was placed the crystal unch bowl, presided over by Mrs. Oswald Martin and at the other end was the beautiful three-tiered wedding cake edged in tiny gold flowers topped with double wedding rings. The dates 1899-1949 in gold were noted. The buffet held an artistic arrangement of golden flowers and gold candles in crystal holders. After Mrs. Martin cut the cake Miss Janet Turner of Hodge, Mrs. Alton Martin, Miss Prentice Jackson, Miss Betty Alice Martin of Calvin, Mrs. Henry Clark of Hodge, Mrs. Noah McGraw of Natchitoches, and Mrs. Rawson Taylor of Dodson, served.
