Lady Demons Sign Atlanta Standout

Class B All-State guard Sonya Bearden of Atlanta High School signed a national
letter of intent Wednesday to play her college basketball for Northwestern
State.

Lady Demon basketball coach James Smith announced the signing and said he
hopes to land at least one more recruit during the November early signing
period, which began Wednesday.

Bearden, a 5-6 senior guard, averaged 21 points, seven rebounds, seven steals,
and three assists a game on her way to being named District MVP and
earning All-State honors as a junior.

"Sonya is a great shooter with three point range.  She is a prototypical Lady
Demon player, she has good quickness and speed that enables her to run the
floor and play pressure defense," said Coach Smith.

Bearden was District MVP and All-State Honorable Mention as a sophomore,
averaging 19 points, five rebounds and five steals.

Atlanta posted a 67-15 (.817) record during Bearden's sophomore and junior
years.
