They must have fit nicely 'cause he set a brand new district track record, then proceeded to establish two new state-wide records. The speedsteer, who won first place with a 10.3 second run in the 100-yard dash in district at Northwestern weekend before last, journeyed down to Baton Rouge last week end and flashed home with new Class C State records in both the 100-yard dash and the 220-yard run. In the 220 event he outdistanced his nearest competitors by several yards in clocking a time of 22.7 and in the 100 yard race he flashed a final burst of speed to overcome a slow start and win in 10.3 seconds. Both records were the best Class C running ever seen at the state meet, and are bettered only in Class A and AA. Jack has had no previous experience in track and received his first spring training a few weeks ago under the tutorship of Calvin Coach Merle Bates, who commented that Jack is one of the speediest athletes he has coached. He has done an outstanding job in pacing the Calvin basketball squad, and also is a top-notch softball player. Coach Buddy Bates said he hopes to obtain an athletic college scholarship for Jack, and that he believes the youth will develop into an all-around and very talented athlete.
