Is Now Called "Speed Merchant". Local Teams to Journey to Baton Rouge For State Rally. Will Also Compete at Natchitoches. Winnfield boys brought home the bacon last Friday and Saturday at the North Louisiana Rally held in Ruston when for the second time in they won the loving cup of the meet. In this rally there were more than 150 entries representing thirty-four schools and it was our own boys that kept the pace on the field that gave them a lead of one and one-eighth their nearest competitor being Shreveport who won twenty-two points, Athens fifteen and one-eighth, Oakridge and Ruston trailing behind Athens with fourteen points each while Ouachita Parish High School had thirteen points thus winning fifth place. The records made by these leading teams proved that the competition was keen in every respect. The field and track meet was witnessed by one of the largest crowds that ever attended a high school event of this kind it was said. And we are proud to say that the all-around star of the meet was our own Winnfield boy Maurice McQiddy who won the 50 yard dash, leading the field from the start and making a good finish. Again in the 100 yard dash, he showed his speed and finished first in a large field just one second above the state record. In the 220 yard dash this "speed-merchant", the Shreveport Times called him, won first honors again. Winnfield produced the star. The other members of the Winnfield team made a good showing. A. T. Drewett won third in the half-mile, and we believe that this little but speedy and determined fellow will make someone hustle next year. Joe Mixon won third in the 120 high hurdles. This is Mixon's first year in the Winnfield school and being a junior will make a valuable man for the next year's team. Tom Grigsby, a senior, made the 220 low hurdles in 28.1 seconds thus winning first place. Tom has been an indespensible man in all athletics since his entrance in high school four years ago, having won distinction in other meets, and especially on the football gridiron. In this meet, three state records were smashed, McQiddy in the 100 yard dash, two boys, Gordon Lee of Homer and Vernon Coates of Ouachita Parish High School of Monroe, beat the state record in the high jump by a margin of one and one half inches tying for first place with a leap of 5 ft. 10 « inches, the record was 5 ft. 9 inches. Shreveport relay team lowered the state time in the mile relay by a margin of one minute and one second. Our boys are going to Natchitoches this week for the Northwest Louisiana Rally and we know that they will mop up, we believe they will anyway. The following week is the state rally at Baton Rouge. So go and we say "Look Out" to all other track teams in the state. Boys, Winnfield is proud of you and your records. Keep it up.
