Hammons Awarded Gold Medal as Best of 200 Players Although his team lost its second game in the Central Louisiana high school basketball tournament at Louisiana College in Pineville last week by a close score, John D. Hammons, Gaars Mill center, was selected by the judges as the most outstanding player of the 200 players participating and was awarded a gold medal. He was a member of the all-tournament team. The Gaars Mill team was outstanding, even though two members of the regular squad, Kermit Crain and Harrison Hancock, were ill and unable to play. Those attending were Jack Branch, Lonnie Kelly, Lee Gaar, Eugene Robertson, Billie Gaar, Benjamin Jeter, and John D. Hammons. The boys eliminated Dry Prong in a hard fought battle Friday but lost to Manifest Saturday by a score of 14-13, after leading them until the last 60 seconds of play. The team was awarded the trophy which is given annually to the team showing the best sportsmanship. The team has had a very successful season, turning in 27 victories to 5 defeats. W.
