Paul Abel Killed In Action In Asiatic Area Had Been Overseas Only A Few Months; Was Serving With Chennault In China The United States flag is flying at half mast on the court square at Winnfield in honor of Second Lieutenant Nathan Paul Abel, 26, who was killed in action September 15, in the Asiatic area. Mr. and Mrs. P. K. Abel, of Winnfield, received the telegram telling of their sons' death from the Adjutant General Thursday morning. Lt. Abel, who served under the command of General Claire Chennault in China, is the first reported Winn Parish casualty reported from that battle zone. Upon receiving his commission as a bombardier at Chandler Field, Arizona, February 17, 1943, Lt. Abel was first assigned for training at Tucson, Arizona. After a few months of advanced flying he was sent overseas about July 1. During August he was stationed in India and only recently was assigned to Gen. Chennault's group in China. He married Miss Mildred Cantrell of Atco, Georgia, at Mesa, Arizona, on February 14, 1943. Before enlisting in the Air Corps he was employed by a butane gas company in Atlanta, Ga., for four years. He graduated from the Winnfield High School in 1935. Lieut. Abel was a member of the Methodist Church and was an accomplished musician. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. K. Abel of Winnfield; his wife, who is now residing with her parents at Atco, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. William Stewart Walker of Winnfield and Mrs. L. H. Martin of Forest, La.; and one brother, John Dale Abel, who is serving with the 51st Ferrying Squadron at Rosecrans Field, St. Joseph, Mo.
