K. Abel Funeral services for Mrs. Florence Whatley Abel, 73, were held at the Winnfield First Methodist Church at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, February 2, with the Rev. Fred S. Flurry, Rev. H. H. McBride, Rev. Alwin Stokes, and Rev. C. M. Robinson officiating. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Mrs. Abel, who had been in ill health for several months, died in a local hospital at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. She had been a patient in the hospital nine days prior to her death. She was born in Union County, Arkansas, on July 29, 1875. After moving to Winn Parish in 1901, she was married to Perry K. Abel, well-known native of Winn, on November 26, 1902. Mr. and Mrs. Abel had made their home in Winnfield since that time. Mrs. Abel was a member of the Winnfield Methodist Church, and had been very active in church and civic affairs until her health failed her several months ago. She was the mother of seven children, four of whom preceded her in death. They were Ruby, Flossie, and P. K. Abel, Jr., and Paul Abel, who was killed in action during World War II. Surviving are her husband, two daughters, Mrs. W. S. Walker of Fort Benning, Georgia, and Mrs. L. H. Martin of Amite, La.; one son, John D. Abel of St. Joseph, Missouri; and four grandchildren, Judy and Beth Abel, Mary Ann Martin and Betty Walker. Pallbearers were E. J. Buchanan, J. F. Lovell, Jr., Harper Terrill, Dudley Shell, Newton Forrest, and James Russell, Jr.
