E. Allen, age 53 years, 8 months and 17 days, sister-in-law of Mr. A. L. Allen of this city, was struck and killed by lightning. Mrs. Allen was sitting in the porch swing with four of her grandchildren, while her husband, son-in-law, and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Jones were also on the porch. The bolt that killed Mrs. Allen also burned one of her grandchildren severely, and set fire to the house which was soon extinguished. Mrs. Allen was raised in Winn Parish and had been a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church since July 1888. They had been living in Dodson for some time where her husband is in the shoe business. She was buried in Zion Hill Cemetery. Besides her husband she leaves one daughter, Mrs. L. W. Jones, and four grandchildren, who were with her at the time of her death. No. 2 Mrs. Thomas E. Allen Killed By Lightning Sunday afternoon during an electrical storm about five thirty, Mrs. Thomas E. Allen, while sitting in the porch swing on the front porch of her home near Gaar's Pharmacy, was struck by lightning and instantly killed. Mr. T. E. Allen, her husband, who was sitting in a chair on the porch, and the children of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Jones, Mrs. Allen's grandchildren, Wiley, Alton, Harold, and Frances, who were sitting on either side of Mrs. Allen escaped with their lives, however, they were considerably stunned and shocked by the lightning. During the electrical storm a Jersey cow, the property of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Gaar and the home of D. W. White was also struck by lightning, however, no casualties of serious damage reported. Mr. White and other members of the family were considerably stuned and some paper thrown in the hearth caught fire, but was extinguished, no serious damage reported. Mr. Allen owns and operates a shoe repair shop which is located near Gaar's Pharmacy, has tree brothers, Arch Allen of Winnfield, Clayton Allen of Dodson, and Will Allen of Jonesville. Mrs. Allen, whose maiden name was Miss Fannie Jordan, was married to Mr. Allen and to this union was born one child, a daughter, Mrs. D. W. Jones, who resides in Dodson. In early youth Mrs. Allen became converted and cast her lot with the Baptist Church, having been a member of the Zion Hill Church, and has during all these years of her connection with this church, lived a faithful, consecrated and devout Christian life; one really worthy of emulation; having always taken an active part in all the affairs of the church, as well as the various church organizations. Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband, Mr. T. E. Allen, one sister, Mrs. Robert Walker of Colfax, and two brothers, J. A. and W. L. Jordan, Lawson Jordan having died recently. Funeral and interment was in the Zion Hill Cemetery Monday afternoon about 5:00, the Rev. Sherwood, the regular pastor of the church, having charge of the services. Rev. Sherwood paid a beautiful tribute to the Christian life and the good works of this good woman; mentioning the fact that Mrs. Allen had been a faithful member of this church for many, many years, and a servant of the Supreme Ruler, and that her suddenly and untimely death was a distinct loss to the community in which she resided. The bereaved family were the recipients of many messages of sympathy, also many beautiful floral offersings were presented, which were another evidence of the popularity and esteem in which Mrs. Allen was held by her relatives and friends, which are many. To the bereaved and grief stricken family, we offer sympathy.
