S. Congressman A. Leonard Allen, 78, died ealry Sunday in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. He was the brother of the late Gov. O. K. Allen. He was born and reared in Winn Parish, the son of Asa L. Allen and Sophronia Perkins Allen, and attended Winn Parish schools. He was graduated from Louisiana State University in 1914, after which he taught and served as principal of Georgetown and Verda High Schools, and he served as superintendent of high schools of Winn Parish from 1917 to 1922. He was admitted to the American Bar Association in 1922 and practiced law in Winnfield until he was elected to the U. S. Congress from the Eighth Congressional District of Louisiana from 1937 until his retirement in 1953. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Lottie Mae Thompson Allen of Winnfield; a son, Judge Harwell L. Allen of Winnfield; a brother, Ira Allen of Leesville; a sister, Mrs. Mattie Broyles of Leesville, and four grandchildren. He was a member of Eastern Star Lodge No. 151, a Scottish Rite Mason, and a Shriner. He was a deacon in the First Baptist Church where he also served for more than 30 years as a Sunday school teacher. Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Cox officiating. Burial will be in Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Winnfield.
