C. Allen Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 8, for Winnfield Mayor D. C. "Doc" Allen who died here Monday night at 10:45 in a local hospital. Mayor Allen, 58, had been in ill health for the past year. Services were held at the First Baptist Church in Winnfield at 2:30 p.m., the pastor, Rev. W. L. Holcomb, officiating, assisted by Rev. W. R. Gage, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Allen, who was serving his third four year term as mayor, was first elected in 1950. He was re-elected in 1954 and 1958. Mayor Allen served on the executive Board of the Louisiana Municipal Association for three years. He was a past president of Cenla Mayors Council and was presented the Distinguished Service Award by the Louisiana Municipal Association in 1954. During his ten years in office Allen accomplished much in improving the city in a tenure hailed as a period of outstanding growth and progress. Born in Ward Two, the son of the late Dutch (Prindo) and Mary Allen, pioneer residents of Winn Parish, Mayor Allen was a lifelong resident of Winn and had lived in Winnfield since 1912. From 1928 until 1941 he served with the State Police and was a captain for the last eight years. In 1941, after resigning from the State Police, he operated a service station and sporting goods business until his first term as mayor in 1950. He was a member of the Masons, Eastern Star, First Baptist Church, and Men's Bible Class in the church. At the time of his death he was a member of the State and National Citizens Safety Advisory Committee. Active pallbearers for Mayor Allen were six Central Louisiana Mayors: George Bowden of Alexandria, Charles Gremillion of Bunkie, Raymond Laborde, of Marksville, C. A. Rhodes, Colfax, F. E. Hernandez, Leesville, and Powell Jones, Boyce. Officials and employees of the City of Winnfield served as honorary pallbearers. In addition to his wife, Mayor Allen is survived by two sons, D. C. Allen, Jr., of Winnfield, and Alton Allen of Los Angeles, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. B. M. Dickerson of Memphis, Tenn.; three brothers, Julius of Baton Rouge, Luther of Alexandria, and Ernest of Many; and several grandchildren.
