Allen Member of One of Oldest Pioneer Families Succumbs to Long Illness Jehu W. Allen, age 71, member of one of the oldest families of Winn Parish and this entire section and father of Assessor W. W. Allen, succumbed to an illness of several months at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. P. Martin, here Wednesday at two o'clock. Mr. Allen was born in Winn Parish, January 9, 1863, son of Max and Elizabeth Allen, who came to this section as pioneers. He, like his father, engaged in the occupation of farming, living about eight miles east of Winnfield until 1898 when he moved his family into town to the advantages of a better school. On January 11, 1883 he was married to Mrs. Virginia Perry, who preceded him in death some six years ago. To them were born three children, all of whom survive, W. W. Allen, Assessor of Winn Parish, Mrs. B. M. Sharkey, Crossett, Ark., and Mrs. W. P. Martin, Winnfield. Other surviving relatives are two brothers, C. C. Allen of Winnfield and C. T. Allen of Pollock, one sister, Mrs. T. F. Wade, New Verda. He was a member of the Baptist Church, having joined more than forty years ago. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at two o'clock, following a brief prayer and song heard from the porch of the old homeplace near the home of Mrs. Martin. Rev. B. C. Land, pastor of the First Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Ellis Smith, pastor of the First Methodist Church and Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, conducted the last rites, and interment was made in the Winnfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bryant Sholars, C. F. Walsworth, B. L. Anderson, D. E. Sikes, J. R. Lanier, and W. U. Drewett. Honorary pallbearers included W. E. Heard, F. L. Shaw, Hasson Morris, Julian Bernstein, W. T. Heflin, O. B. Thompson, E. J. Byrnes, J. W. Shelton, Lee J. Grigsby, W. C. Turner, N. L. Horton, and J. W. Perdue.
