W. Avant Held At Mars Hill Funeral services for Mrs. J. W. Avant, age 68, who died July 16 in a hospital in Shreveport, were held Sunday afternoon at Mars Hill conducted by the Rev. Tommy Arrington of Dry Prong and the Rev. Walter Bernard of Verda. Surviving are six sons, Ellis Avant of Kilgore, Texas, Clarence Avant of Verda, Roy Avant of Dry Prong, Nathaniel Avant of Atlanta, Odis Avant, U. S. Navy, San Diego, Calif., J. Avant of Camp Livingston; five daughters, Mrs. Iva Lee Shaw of Kilgore, Texas, Mrs. Helen Haynes of Hampton, Ark., Mrs. Lavell Brady of Hargis, Mrs. Calvin Owens and Mrs. H. B. Shows of Atlanta, Route 2; two sisters, Mrs. Adee Ceuts, Hampton, Ark., Mrs. Rue Dick of New Orleans; four brothers, Gus Barker of El Dorado, Ark., Earl Barker of Ruston, Olon Barker of Lucky, and Edd Barker of Pine Bluff, Ark. She was a member of the Methodist Church, which she united with early childhood. From: July 22, 1943 Winn Parish Enterprise Death Claims Mrs. Bendette Avant, 68, Atlanta, July 16 Funeral services for Mrs. Bendette Avant, 68, of Atlanta, who died in a Shreveport hospital Friday, July 16, after several months illness, were held at the Mars Hill church Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Arrington officiating. Burial was made in the Mars Hill Cemetery under direction of Edmonds' Funeral Home. Mrs. Avant came to Louisiana from Hampton, Ark., in 1916 with her husband, J. W. Avant, who preceded her in death in 1935. Since that time she has made her home in the Atlanta community. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Surviving relatives include six sons, Clarance Avant of Verda, Nathan Avant of Atlanta, Roy Avant of Dry Prong, Ellis Avant of Kilgore, Texas, Fireman 1st Class Otis Avant, U. S. Navy, somewhere overseas, Pfc. J. D. Avant, Camp Livingston, La.; five daughters, Mrs. Helen Haynes of Hampton, Ark., Mrs. Abbie Brady of Montgomery, Mrs. Lottie Owens of Atlanta, Mrs. Johnnie Shows of Atlanta, Mrs. Iva Lee Shaw of Kilgore, Texas; four brothers, A. G. Barker of El Dorado, Ark., E. R. Barker of Ruston, O. R. Barker of Saline, Ed Barker of Pine Bluff, Ark.; two sisters, Mrs. Neal Dick of New Orleans, Mrs. Addie Counts of Hampton, Ark.; and 32 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
