Avant Held At Mars Hill Funeral services for Vaughan E. Avant, 36, who died suddenly at 2:15 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 1960 at his home in Hathaway,near Jennings, La., were conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Mars Hill Baptist Church near Atlanta. Officiating were Rev. Charles Barfield and Rev. Ray Teal. Full military rites were conducted by solders from England Air Force Base and burial was under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Mr. Avant was born and reared near Atlanta and graduated from Atlanta High School in 1940. He entered the armed forces in 1943 to pursue a military career and during his length of stay he spent seven years overseas. A few years ago he received his discharge because of ill health. He had recently joined his brother in business in Hathaway, leaving Winnfield, where for the past two years he attended the Winnfield Trade School and operated a figh bait business. He was a member of the South Winnfield Baptist Church and Brotherhood. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hazel Avant; one daughter, Beverley, both of Jennings; a son, Vaughan Avant, Jr., San Diego, Calif.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Avant, Sr., Atlanta; a brother, Nathan Avant, Jr., Jennings; four nephews and three nieces. Among out of town relatives and friends attending the last rites were: Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bucklin, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Jester, Mrs. Weldon, Mer Herman Talley, Mr. Adam Gary, Wesley Reeves, Marvin Crochett, all of Jennings, La. J. C. Avant, Mrs. Roy Johnston, Shreveport; Mrs. J. W. Lutes, San Benito, Tex., Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Shows and son, Pineville; Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Brady and daughter, Mrs. Calvin Owens, Mr. and Mrs. Don Brady, Mrs. D. D. Jowers, Taylor, La.; Roy Avant, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Hodnett, Colfax; Mr. and Mrs. Perry Killingsworth, Frank Killingsworth, Baton Rouge; Mr. and Mrs. O. L.
