Avant of Atlanta Is Buried Tuesday John W. Avant, 65 years of age, died at his home near Atlanta on Monday night, December 9, 1935 following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon at Mars Hill with the Rev. Balford Foster, Baptist minister, in charge. Interment was in the Mars Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the Conservation department which the deceased was an employee. Mr. Avant was born in Calhoun County, Arkansas. He, with his family, came to the Atlanta Community in 1010, where he engaged in farming until his death. For the past several years he has been an employee of the state conservation department. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Bendette Barker Avant; eleven sons and daughters: Nathan, Roy, Otis, and J. D. Avan, Mrs. E. L. Brady and Mrs. Calvin Owens, all of Atlanta; Clarence Avant and Mrs. H. B. Shows of Verda; Ellis Avant of Kilgore, Texas; Mrs. H. D. Haynes of Hampton, Ark.; and Mrs. Eugene Shaw of Winnfield. Three brothers and three sisters also survive. They are George and Dick Avant of Hampton, Ark., Add Avant of Port Arthur, Texas, Mrs. Ivey Nunn, Dumas, Ark., Mrs. H. J. Blakely, Fordyce, Ark., and Mrs. Annie Ennis, Carthage, Arkansas.
