Martha Timmerman was born in Coosa County, Alabama, November 27, 1847 and lived there with her parents until grown. In Coosa County, December 8, 1864 she was married to David Franklin Averett, who was at that time a soldier in the Confederate Army and who was at home on furlough recuperating from a bullet wound in the forehead received at the Battle of the Wilderness. Mrs. Averett, in speaking of her marriage, the war, and her life, said to a friend a few months ago that she was proud of that scar in her husband's forehead for it showed that he was facing the enemy. In 1877 Mr. and Mrs. Averett moved from Alabama to Louisiana and settled in Claiborne Parish. About thirteen years ago they came to Winnfield where they have continuously resided since, both healthy and hearty until about a year ago Mrs. Averett's health began to fail.
