Averett, Confederate Soldier, Dies At His Home Friday David Franklin Averett, age 89 years, 8 months and 16 days, died at his home Friday morning, November 11, after an illness of several months. Mr. Averett, notwithstanding his venerable age, was hale, hearty, and energetic up until the death of his wife, July 30, 1927, after which he began to decline in health. He was born and reared in Alabama and has a splendid war record, serving in the Infantry, 15th Alabama Regiment, during the entire period of the Civil War. In the Battle of Wilderness, May 6, 1864, Mr. Averett escaped death by the narrowest of margins, a bullet entering one side of his forehead, passing under the skin and emerging from the other side of the forehead. While he was convalescing from these wounds, he married Martha Tinnerman (Timmerman?) In Coosa County, Alabama, December 8, 1864. After the close of the war, Mr. and Mrs. Averett moved to Louisiana where they spent the rest of their lives. They were residents of Winnfield about 14 years. Mr. Averett is survived by nine children: W. O. Averett, Mrs. J. R. Watts, and Mrs. C. E. Sompayrac, of Winnfield; J. R. Averett, Halleville, Texas; D. E. Averett, Gilmer, Texas; Mrs. W. A. Stamper, Natchitoches; W. W. Averett, Shreveport; Clarence Averett, Dallas, Texas; Mrs. William Baker, Pocahontas, Miss. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Saturday morning, Rev. A. H. Cullen and P. M. Caraway officiating. Interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery.
