W. Allen, Former Winn Assessor, Dies Walter William Allen, one of the pioneer leaders of Winn Parish, died at the age of 89 on Sunday, February 18, 1973 in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Mr. Allen was born in Winnfield on October 14, 1883, the son of Jehu Walter Allen and Mrs. Virginia Perry Allen. He spent his entire life in Winn Parish, was educated in the public schools of Winn Parish, and taught school for a short time. He also served as a conductor on the Rock Island Railroad until a short time before his appointment as Deputy Assessor of Winn Parish under the late Governor O. K. Allen, who, during World War I, served as Assessor of Winn Parish. Mr. Allen was a cousin of the late Governor O. K. Allen and a close friend and political confidante of the late Huey P. Long and Earl K. Long. In 1920, Mr. Allen was elected assessor of Winn Parish, after having served as assistant assessor to O. K. Allen. Mr. Walter W. Allen served longer than any other Parish assessor, continuously from 1920 to 1946 and held a lifetime membership in the Louisiana Assessors' Association. He served as president of the Association in 1943. In 1945 he joined his sons in the appliance and vending business in Winnfield. He retired in 1956 but continued to serve the company, Allen & Allen, Inc., as president in a part time capacity until his death. He was married to the former Lula Mae Perkins of Sikes, Louisiana, who died in 1966. They had three children, Mable Allen Breaux of Baton Rouge, the late J. W. Allen of Winnfield, and W. Warren Allen of Winnfield. In addition to two of his children, Mr. Allen is survived by one sister, Mrs. W. P. Martin, of Winnfield, several nieces and nephews, and five grandchildren. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 20, 1973, with Rev. J. C. Skinner and Rev. R. H. Staples officiating. Interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Pallbearers included Joe LaCroix, John W. Brister, Jr., J. W. Kennedy, Jr., E. F. Love, Harper Terrill, Al McCulley, Weston G. Foster, L. L. Brewton, Jr.
