The sheriff's office reported that H. B. Barfield, 50, his alleged adversary, surrendered after the shooting and that Barber died three hours later. Both men were farmers and the duel was believed to have been precipitated by a dispute over their farm's boundary lines following an extended period of enmity. Although there were not witnesses, officers say they learned from statements secured from the two men that they met and shot it out late Wednesday of last week after taking up stands 45 feet apart along a fence row. Each accused the other of firing first. Funeral services for Barber were held last Thursday. Barber was a son in law of Mr. J. T. Odom, of Curry. His wife preceded him in death several years ago. He is survived by several children by a first marriage and one child by his last marriage.
