The youth was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bartley and at a coroner's inquest his 16 year old close companion, ____________, testified that the pistol "went off" when he handed it to Bartley. The incident happened in young ____ bedroom in Jordan Hill. He is the son of ________________. Only the two young boys were in the room at the time. ________ told the coroner's jury that he had the automatic pistol in a holster at the head of his bed. He was asleep when Bartley arrived for a visit. On waking ________, Bartley asked to see the pistol. ______ said he handed it to his friend and it fired. _______ ran from the room to tell his mother. Young Bartley was rushed to a hospital here by a Southern Funeral Home ambulance. The driver, Bob Smith, told the jurymen at the inquest Tuesday there was little sign of life when he picked Bartley up. Dr. Charles Weaver, attending physician at Martin's Hospital when the youth was brought in, said he could not determine without an autopsy the cause of death, however he said indications were that the bullet in the left upper abdomen severed a large blood vessel, the aorta. In addition to his parents, young Bartley's survivors include three brothers, Dennis of Winnfield, Walter of Atlanta, and George of Jordan Hill; two sisters, Mrs. Loyd Mercer, Winnfield, and Miss Melba Bartley, Jordan Hill. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 2, in the Big Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Hardy Beaubouef officiating. Burial will be in the Jordan Hill Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. The body will be at the Bartley home in Jordan Hill until services.
