Clarence Bates Rev. Clarence D. Bates, Sr., 63, of Jonesboro, formerly of Winnfield, died Monday, February 6, 1984 at 11:55 p.m. in Jackson Parish Hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at The Greater Pentecostal Church in Alexandria with Rev. G. A. Mangun, Rev. Nathaniel Urshan, Rev. C. C. Marler, and Rev. T. F. Tenney officiating. He will lie in state at Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield before services in Alexandria. Interment will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery under direction of Southern. Rev. Bates was a minister and pastor of the Winnfield United Pentecostal Church for sixteen years. He also pastored many other churches, his ministry spanning 30 years or more. He retired from the Louisiana State Police as a lieutenant after 20 years service where he received numerous citations of merit. He also retired from the Louisiana Public Service Commission where he worked for Commissioner Ed Kennon. At the time of his death he was employed as an aide to Governor-elect Edwin Edwards. He was a native of Winn Parish. Survivors include his wife, Jean of Jonesboro; four sons, C. Delle Bates, Jr. of Orange, Texas, George P. Bates of Jackson, Mississippi, Tom Paul Bates of Orange, Texas, and Garold T. Bates of Many, La.; one daughter, Mrs. William (Rhonda) M. Russell III of Winnfield; two stepsons, Murphy Chestnut of Jonesboro and David Chestnut of Jonesboro; two stepdaughters, Tina Harrell of Jonesboro and Tammy Chestnut of Jonesboro. Three brothers, Earlie Bates of Calvin, La., Aurie Bates of Calvin, La., and Henry Bates of Winnfield, La.; two sisters, Clara Belle Foster of Shreveport, La., and Ruth Key of Calvin, La., and eleven grandchildren.
