All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: January 11, 1945 Winn Parish Enterprise Eugene Beck Dies Suddenly Here Saturday, Jan. 6 Eugene Beck, 50, died suddenly at his home in Winnfield Saturday night, January 6, 1944 (?) from a heart attack. His sudden death came as a surprise to his many friends through out this section of the state, as he apparently was in the best of health until a few days before being confined to his home last week because of an attack of influenza. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church, Monday afternoon, with the pastor, Rev. H. H. McBride, conducting the religious rites. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Active pallbearers were John McCloy, John Sowers, Leo Sowers, Jewel Maxey, S. L. Garrett, and R. H Fletcher. Mr. Beck was one of the leading attorneys of the local bar. He also was one of the leading lay members of the Baptist Church in Central Louisiana and at his death was moderator of the Winn Parish Baptist Association, and for many years has been a deacon in the First Baptist Church here. During World War I, he served as Yeoman in the navy. Upon being discharged from the navy in 1919, he became deputy clerk of court for Winn Parish. While serving as deputy clerk of court he studied law and was admitted to the bar after passing the state bar examination and has practiced his profession here for more than 20 years. Besides his law practice he has conducted a very successful real estate operation, and at his death was one of the parish's largest property owners. For many years he has been a member of the Winn Parish Democratic executive committee and secretary of the body. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Lt. Robert Eugene Beck, USNR; Charles Beck, A/S USNR; one daughter, Miss Mary Nell Beck of Winnfield; father, R. F. Beck, Jena; one brother, Marvin E. Beck, Heflin; three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Hinton and Mrs. Anna Kirkham, of Olla, and Mrs. L. Taylor, of Jena.
