B. Begley, 52, who drowned Sunday afternoon, May 4, were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Zion Hill Baptist Church. Begley drowned in an attempt to save his stepson, James, at Spillway near Carey Salt Company on Natchitoches highway. A Winnfield youth, one of a group which came along shortly after Begley jumped in the water gave this account of the accident: The boy fell into the water and Begley jumped in to save him. A Winnfield man, Bryant Hatten, was passing about that time and hearing the boy's shouts, jumped in and saved him. The boy kept saying, "Dad's in there." A group of local high school boys, Dick Evans, John Echols, A. B. White, James Emerson, and Charles Varnell, came along and began diving in an attempt to locate him, but were unsuccessful. Hatten came to town to get help. A. T. Drewett brought a boat and John Carter and Howard Straughan, local service station attendants, with two of the high school boys, began dragging the water with hooks. About the third drag, Begley's body was brought up. According to the report, Begley was in the water about two hours before being found. The drowned man was a native of Kentucky and was vice president of the Winnfield Sewing Center at the time of his death. He was formerly a partner in the B and G sewing center here, also. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lorline Begley, a son, James, and a daughter, Jo Ann, all of Winnfield. Pallbearers were Aubrey Hammons, Walter Speed, Leroy Deas, Morris Wood, E. H. Harrel, and Francis Walker. Rev. Alwin Stokes conducted the funeral with burial under direction of Southern Funeral Home.
